What is automatic wage indexation?
Automatic wage indexation is the mechanism by which Belgian salaries rise in line with the cost of living, without anyone asking. It is not discretionary and it is not a reward. It happens because a sector agreement says it must.
The reference is the smoothed health index, a version of the consumer price index that excludes tobacco, alcohol and motor fuel, published by Statbel. Belgium is one of very few countries where this linkage is systematic rather than exceptional.
When does indexation happen?
It depends entirely on your joint committee. Some index once a year on a fixed date. Others index whenever the index crosses a pivot threshold, which can mean several adjustments in an inflationary year and none in a flat one.
In the joint committee that covers most Belgian white-collar employees, including much of the IT sector, indexation happens once a year on the first of January. That single design choice means the increase arrives as one visible jump rather than as a series of small ones, and that a salary agreed in November is worth measurably less in real terms by the time it is first indexed.
How is indexation different from a pay rise?
This is the distinction worth being clear about, because employers occasionally blur it. Indexation preserves purchasing power. A pay rise increases it. If your salary moved only by the index, your real pay is flat.
The two also behave differently in a negotiation. Indexation is owed and needs no argument. A real increase is on top of it, and asking for one during an indexation month is asking for the wrong thing at the wrong moment.
What does indexation apply to?
Both actual salaries and the minimum scales. Your own pay is indexed, and so is the salary scale that sets the floor beneath it, which means the floor moves up under you rather than staying where it was when you joined.
That has a consequence people notice late: if you were hired close to the minimum and never received a real increase, the scale can eventually catch up with your salary. Sparagus states the package on each opening rather than leaving it to the interview, so you can see the starting point before applying across the roles currently open.
