How do eco vouchers work?
Eco vouchers are granted by employers on top of salary, usually under a sector agreement. The maximum is €250 per year per full-time employee, with at most €10 per voucher. They are electronic and valid for 24 months, according to Securex.
They are exempt from social security and tax for the employee if the conditions are met, but they are not deductible for the employer. Our definition of eco vouchers sets out the mechanism.
What can you buy with eco vouchers?
Only products and services on an official list of ecological purchases: energy-efficient appliances, bikes, second-hand goods, organic products and similar items. They can never be exchanged for cash.
The list was revised from 1 June 2026, as Liantis summarises: fridges now need energy class A to C, dishwashers class A, and Fairtrade and ASC-labelled products were added. Check the list before buying, because not every shop applies it the same way.
Are eco vouchers being abolished?
Not yet. The federal coalition agreement plans to phase out eco, culture, sport and gift vouchers and keep only meal vouchers. As of October 2026, no law or implementing measure has been adopted, and there is no abolition date.
The National Labour Council issued opinion n° 2.498 on 22 September 2026 on the phase-out of these vouchers. According to Pluxee, the social partners recommended keeping eco vouchers. Vouchers already granted stay valid until their expiry date in any case.
What should you do with your eco vouchers now?
Use them before they expire. Check the expiry date in your voucher provider’s app, since unused value is lost after 24 months whatever happens to the scheme.
If you are comparing job offers, treat eco vouchers as a small part of the package, about €250 a year at most, and one whose future is uncertain. Other extra-legal benefits, such as meal vouchers or a mobility budget, weigh much more. See how packages compare across IT and engineering roles currently open.
